Tour Overview

Thessaloniki has many stories to tell, and the first one decants from the time of its founding, since the new city was named after Thessalonica , sister of Alexander the Great and the daughter of King Philip II of Macedon. Thessaloniki developed very quickly because of its exceptional geographical location at one of the main ports.

Thessaloniki is known as the financial and commercial center of Macedonia and the Balkan Peninsula, advantages that have been reserved for 2300 years. Convincing proof of this evolution are the numerous monuments surrounding the city. Open and and visitable, they live with the people and tell stories of various eras, cultures and religions. Listen to its history to understand what all these wonderful monuments mean, before walking throughout the city and feeling this uniqueness that makes Thessalonians so proud of their past.

Activity Info

Meet with our guide and begin the tour with a sightseeing tour around the city. See the main sights of the city. Make a brief stop at the White Tower to take some photos. Then continue the tour by visiting Agios Demetrios Byzantine church which is the most important church in Thessaloniki for religious, historical and artistic reasons. The most famous and interesting part of the church, is the underground ancient “Crypt.” The crypt was rediscovered after the fire of 1917 and was finally restored as an exhibition/museum in 1988. According to Christian tradition, the saint was imprisoned here and died in 303 AD . You will also have the opportunity to visit the Archaeological Museum where artifacts from the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic, and Roman periods are displayed, mostly from the city of Thessaloniki, but also from the region of Macedonia in general.
